Airburn Sounds has joined forces with CPT Switch, Nation 365, Predope The Vocalist and Tshepo Keyz for “SOWETO”, a vibrant Amapiano-meets-disco celebration of the township’s energy, culture and unmistakable rhythm
“Soweto” is a vibrant Amapiano-inspired celebration of the township’s personality, movement and unmistakable social energy. Blending the infectious pulse of Amapiano with subtle disco influences, mellow textures and an easy-going groove, the song is designed to feel both nostalgic and fresh – a record that can move from a daytime drive to a family gathering, a chilled afternoon or a late-night dancefloor.
A SOUND INSPIRED BY SOWETO
For Airburn Sounds, “Soweto” is less about trying to define the township and more about capturing a feeling.
Soweto – short for South Western Townships – sits southwest of Johannesburg and has grown from its complex apartheid-era history into a sprawling cultural and entertainment hub known for its music, food, entrepreneurship, street life, sport and tourism. South African Tourism describes the area as a vibrant and energetic centre of South African culture.
“‘Soweto’ is a celebration of the energy, personality and spirit that makes Soweto so special. I wanted to create something that feels fun and effortless – a song you can dance to, enjoy with your friends and family, and hear something familiar in, regardless of your age,” Airburn Sounds says.
“We brought together Amapiano, a touch of disco and a mellow groove, and the different artists added their own flavour to the record. For me, this song is about capturing that feeling of being in Soweto – vibrant, alive and always moving.”
That energy is at the heart of the new single.
The production allows the artists to paint a musical picture of Soweto – lively streets, people connecting, weekend movement, township style, music playing from different corners and the feeling of being surrounded by people who know how to celebrate life.
There is a deliberate lightness to the record. Rather than making the song overly aggressive or club-focused, Airburn Sounds has created a groove that gives listeners room to enjoy it at their own pace.
FROM THE KASI TO THE DANCEFLOOR
Soweto has long been closely connected to the development of South African popular culture. The township has played an important role in the country’s musical history, with Kwaito and Kasi Rap among the sounds associated with its cultural landscape.
Its cultural influence can also be seen beyond music.
It is this combination of history, culture and modern-day energy that gives “Soweto” its inspiration.
A SONG FOR DIFFERENT GENERATIONS
While firmly rooted in the current Amapiano era, “Soweto” intentionally avoids being limited to one demographic.
The disco influence adds a familiar rhythmic quality, while the mellow production creates a softer entry point for listeners who may not necessarily identify themselves as Amapiano fans.
For younger listeners, it offers a contemporary township groove. For older listeners, the disco touches and relaxed rhythm bring a sense of familiarity.
The result is a song built around enjoyment – something to sing along to, dance to or simply let play in the background while the day unfolds.
AIRBURN SOUNDS AND THE COLLECTIVE ENERGY
The collaboration brings together different voices and musical personalities, with CPT Switch, Nation 365, Predope The Vocalist and Tshepo Keyz joining Airburn Sounds to give the track its collaborative character.
Rather than relying on one dominant sound, “Soweto” gives each contributor space to add to the overall atmosphere, creating a record that feels communal – much like the township that inspired it.
At its core, the song is about movement, connection and celebration.
It is Soweto through a musical lens: colourful, energetic, relaxed, rhythmic and always moving.
