Westerford Learners Explore Ocean Sustainability with Sea Harvest and MSC
Learners at Westerford High School recently had the opportunity to engage with ocean conservation, responsible fishing and sustainable seafood choices during an educational session hosted by Sea Harvest in partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
.
The session formed part of Westerford High School’s Multi-Multi programme, an initiative designed to expose learners to a wide range of relevant, real-world topics beyond the traditional classroom environment. Through these sessions, learners are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and engage with issues that shape the world around them.
The MSC and Sea Harvest session focused on sustainability within the fishing industry, with a particular emphasis on responsible sourcing, ocean health and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems for future generations. Learners were introduced to the role of MSC certification and how the MSC blue label helps consumers identify seafood products that come from fisheries meeting globally recognised standards for sustainable fishing.
.
A key part of the session also highlighted Sea Harvest’s MSC-accredited fish fingers, which are the only fish fingers in the country to carry this accreditation. This provided learners with a practical, everyday example of how familiar household products can connect to larger conversations around responsible sourcing, traceability and ocean conservation.
The discussion explored how everyday choices, including the seafood people buy and consume, can contribute to broader sustainability efforts. By using accessible, real-life examples, the session aimed to help learners better understand the connection between responsible fishing, ethical sourcing and the long-term protection of fish stocks.
.
“Through the Sea Harvest and MSC Mission Blue campaign, our aim is to make ocean conservation and sustainable seafood choices more accessible and understandable, especially for younger generations. Sea Harvest’s MSC-accredited fish fingers, the only fish fingers in the country to carry this accreditation, offer a practical example of how everyday seafood choices can support responsible sourcing. By engaging learners directly, we hope to encourage a greater awareness of the role young people can play in protecting our oceans for future generations,” says Shaza Pitso, Junior Brand Manager at Sea Harvest.
.
Through its Mission Blue campaign, Sea Harvest and MSC continue to support education-led conversations around ocean awareness and sustainable seafood choices. The Westerford High School session formed part of this broader commitment to making sustainability more relatable and meaningful for younger audiences.
