From Phaphazela Village To The World Stage: Dr Risimati Mathye Releases The Triumphant Mind
The South African engineer and public sector leader explores the power of the mind, resilience and personal transformation in a compelling new book.
From the hardships of rural Limpopo to senior public sector leadership and international platforms, Dr Risimati Mathye’s journey is at the heart of his newly released book, The Triumphant Mind: From Phaphazela Village, Limpopo to the World Stage.
The book explores the distance between a person’s beginnings and what they can ultimately become, offering readers a reflection on the mindset, decisions, sacrifices and experiences that shape personal growth.
Born and raised in Phaphazela Village, Limpopo, Dr Mathye grew up in a family that faced significant financial challenges. After a devastating fire destroyed their home, his family at one point slept beneath a mango tree while rebuilding their lives. These early experiences became part of a journey that would eventually lead him into engineering, academia, public leadership and international engagement.
Holding a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, Dr Mathye has more than two decades of experience in infrastructure development and public administration. He currently serves as Deputy Director-General: Water and Sanitation Services Management at South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation.
Through personal experiences and reflections, The Triumphant Mind examines the internal battles, setbacks, relationships and decisions that shape a person long before success becomes visible.
Rather than presenting a formula for success, the book invites readers to reflect on their own journeys and consider what it takes to keep moving forward when circumstances challenge their ambitions.
At its heart is a powerful reminder of the relationship between present decisions and future possibilities.
“FUTURE-YOU is shaped by the decisions of the PRESENT-YOU. Dreams may be free, but triumph carries a cost.”

BOOK SYNOPSIS
The Triumphant Mind™ is a powerful reflection on what becomes possible through a mind that learns to triumph. Through the life, experiences and reflections of Dr Risimati Mathye, the book examines the extraordinary distance that can exist between a person’s beginnings and their becoming. From Phaphazela Village in Limpopo, through poverty, education, engineering, academia, professional advancement and public leadership, to international platforms, Dr Mathye reflects not simply on where his life has taken him, but on the mind that had to develop along the way. His story becomes the lens through which the reader encounters a larger human question: What makes it possible for someone to see beyond the evidence of their present circumstances and progressively become what their beginnings could not predict?
The book begins with self-discovery. It moves through dreams and their cost, perception, competing voices, relationships, destiny helpers, adversity, resilience, temporary victories, failure, perseverance and the responsibility of finally arriving at the triumph one has pursued.
Dr Mathye does not present his journey as a straight line. There are moments of poverty and uncertainty. There are decisions that appear, at first, to have been mistakes. There are seasons of progress and seasons of despair. There are people whose voices strengthen the journey and others whose interpretations can threaten it. There are victories that feel final but are only temporary.
There are moments when the individual must stop, reassess and launch again.
Running through these reflections is the power of the mind: the place in which possibility can be conceived before it becomes visible, but also the place where doubt, fear, perception and the voices of others can interrupt what a person might otherwise become.
The Triumphant Mind is therefore neither a celebration of achievement nor a prescription for Success. It is a reflection on becoming. Dr Mathye looks backwards from the vantage point of the man he has become and examines the boy, the choices, the people, the failures, the sacrifices, the lessons and the internal battles that existed before the titles and accomplishments. Ultimately, his reflections converge around four enduring principles:
