Why Thembelihle Buthelezi believes you don’t have to quit your job to become an entrepreneurWhy Thembelihle Buthelezi believes you don’t have to quit your job to become an entrepreneur
For many aspiring entrepreneurs, the dream of owning a business comes with an uncomfortable reality – there are bills to pay, families to support, debt to manage and a career that cannot simply be abandoned.
Thembelihle “Thembi” Buthelezi’s new book, The Employed Entrepreneur: Building a Business While You Still Have a Job, starts with that reality rather than ignoring it.
The book challenges one of the most persistent ideas in entrepreneurship culture: that anyone who is truly serious about business must resign from their job, take the risk and “go all in”.
Thembelihle argues that for many people, the opposite can be true.
Employment can provide the income, structure, experience and breathing room needed to build something properly. Rather than viewing a salary as an obstacle to entrepreneurship, The Employed Entrepreneur presents employment as a potential safety net, training ground and launchpad.
It is an especially relevant conversation in South Africa, where professionals are increasingly looking at additional income streams and business ownership while navigating the realities of financial responsibility.
A different conversation about entrepreneurship
Thembelihle is not telling people to remain employees forever. Her argument is more nuanced – build first, create structure, test the idea, understand the numbers, develop customers and systems, and make the decision to leave employment when the business and the circumstances justify it.
“The message is not ‘quit your job’. The message is ‘build wisely while you still have the protection of employment’,” the author says in her media positioning for the book.
The book is aimed at the person who has an idea but also has responsibilities. That includes professionals, young leaders, working mothers, graduates, side hustlers and corporate employees who want to create something of their own without putting their entire livelihood at risk.
The book opens up a broader conversation around the changing meaning of work – from the rise of the side hustle and multiple income streams to workplace ethics, burnout, financial readiness and the question of when it actually makes sense to leave a job.
From corporate technology to entrepreneurship
Thembelihle brings personal experience to the conversation.
She is a Software Development Manager in the banking sector and an MBA graduate of Wits Business School. Alongside her corporate career, she is the founder of Connection House, an events and production company, and co-founder of Venuapp, a food ordering and delivery platform built for live events.
She is also a speaker, media commentator, independent director and now author.
Her experience is central to the book’s premise – that entrepreneurship does not necessarily have to begin with a dramatic resignation letter.
Instead, it can begin quietly.
It can start with an idea after work, a first customer, a small service, a prototype, a weekend spent figuring out the numbers or the decision to finally take an idea seriously.
The book encourages readers to move from simply having a side hustle to building something with structure, systems, customers, delivery, growth and long-term value.
The questions behind the book
At its heart, The Employed Entrepreneur asks questions that many working South Africans are already wrestling with:
- Why do we assume quitting is the ultimate proof of entrepreneurial commitment?
- Can a person build a serious company without immediately leaving their job?
- When does a side hustle become a real business?
- How can employees pursue business ambitions without compromising their jobs?
- What ethical boundaries should employed entrepreneurs observe?
- How do you know when you are financially and operationally ready to leave employment?
- And perhaps most importantly – what happens when the dream is real, but so are the responsibilities?
These are conversations that make the book suitable for business, careers, entrepreneurship, lifestyle, personal finance, corporate culture and human-interest features.
