SMIRNOFF 1818 BRINGS TOGETHER THOUSANDS FOR THE INAUGURAL REAL MAKOYA IMBIZO IN DURBAN
More than 4,000 music lovers, cultural enthusiasts and Smirnoff 1818 consumers descended on Berea Rovers in Durban this past weekend for the inaugural Smirnoff Real Makoya Imbizo, a first-of-its-kind cultural celebration that brought together some of South Africa’s most influential artists and music genres under one roof.
Far more than a music festival, the Real Makoya Imbizo served as a powerful celebration of identity, heritage and cultural expression, reaffirming Smirnoff 1818’s long-standing commitment to investing in the communities and cultural movements that continue to shape South Africa’s social landscape.
From the moment gates opened, attendees were immersed in an experience that celebrated the rich roots of Maskandi while showcasing the evolution of South African music through Gqom, Amapiano, House and AfroSoul. The result was a seamless fusion of sounds that reflected the country’s diversity and demonstrated how traditional and contemporary cultures continue to influence one another.
One of the day’s most anticipated moments saw Maskandi giants Khuzani Mpungose (Indlamlenze) and Mthandeni Manqele (Igcokama Elisha) share the same platform, drawing enthusiastic support from thousands of fans. Their performances highlighted the growing influence of Maskandi across the country and reinforced the genre’s ability to unite communities through music.
The star-studded line-up also featured unforgettable performances from Big Zulu, Ntencane, Lwah Ndlunkulu, Goldmax, Benny Maverick, DJ Cndo and DJ Wobbly, creating an electric atmosphere that kept crowds engaged from afternoon through to midnight.
Beyond the music, festivalgoers enjoyed immersive Smirnoff 1818 brand experiences, curated food offerings, exclusive merchandise activations and social spaces designed to foster connection and community, all contributing to an event experience that extended beyond the stage.
