BALLROOM IS THE SOURCE: THE LEGACY BALL RETURNS TO CAPE TOWN THIS APRIL
On Saturday, 25 April 2026, LEGACY returns to Hearty Collective from 21:00 to 02:00, not just as an event, but as a cultural correction.
Adding to the night’s significance, the judging panel will feature international ballroom icon Legendary Amber “Ambience” Vineyard. A globally recognised figure within the ballroom community, her presence brings authority, lineage, and international perspective to the floor, connecting Cape Town’s scene to the wider global ballroom ecosystem.
This year’s April Ball is anchored in a clear narrative: ballroom is not adjacent to mainstream culture, it is the source. From the way artists perform, to the language used across social media, to the structure of fashion and entertainment itself, the influence of ballroom has been widely adopted, often without recognition. LEGACY exists to reclaim that authorship.
Ballroom’s influence on mainstream culture is both expansive and largely uncredited. The language alone has travelled globally. Terms like “serving,” “clock it,” “period,” and “shade” now shape everyday conversation, social media, and entertainment without acknowledgment of their origins.
Visually, the ballroom’s imprint is just as visible. The camp sensibility, exaggerated silhouettes, and high-glamour pageantry seen on international runways, red carpets, and music videos reflect codes developed on ballroom floors decades ago. The performance style of global pop stars, from precision choreography to attitude-driven stage presence, draws directly from voguing and ballroom traditions. These influences are not only global. Across South African fashion, nightlife, and queer creative scenes, ballroom’s language, styling, and performance energy continue to inform how culture is expressed and experienced. What is often consumed as trend or aesthetic is in reality a fully formed cultural system created by Black and Latino queer communities, one that continues to evolve often without the recognition it deserves
Founded as a tribute to the late Kirvan Fortuin and the House of Le Cap, LEGACY has grown into the definitive platform for ballroom in Cape Town, now representing all 11 active houses across mainstream and kiki scenes. Co-created by ballroom consultant Rori Bingham and Edition Events founder Léa Debbah, the platform continues to centre the culture in its most authentic form.
“Ballroom has shaped so much of what the world now recognises as culture, from movement to language to performance,” says Rori Bingham. “LEGACY is about making that lineage visible again, and creating a space where the culture is not interpreted, but presented as it truly is.”
“Everything on the floor: the movement, the attitude, the artistry it all comes from a culture built over decades by communities who created their own stages, rules, and families,” says Léa Debbah. “At Edition Events, our role is to honour that system, not interpret it or borrow from it. LEGACY exists to give ballroom the visibility, respect, and platform it has always deserved, and to ensure that the people who built it are centred in the story we tell.
The Pageant Ball is a fully structured ballroom event rooted in a global tradition spanning over five decades. Walkers compete across categories judged in real time, supported by their houses or walking as independent 007s, each performance contributing to an ongoing legacy of excellence and self-definition.
Categories (Open To All):
- Best Dressed: Evening Wear
- Vogue Performance: Embellished Hands (Grand Prize)
- Lip Sync Performance
- Body: Swimsuit
- Face: Pageant Hair & Makeup
With DJs Nkuley and Not a She controlling the sonic landscape, the night unfolds as a live exchange between sound, movement, and competition. A format that cannot be replicated outside of ballroom itself.
Following its 2025 expansion onto the Rocking the Daisies main stage, LEGACY continues to grow its visibility while maintaining cultural integrity. The Pageant Ball is not a translation of ballroom for mainstream audiences, it is the culture, presented in its full context.
The event is open to all, with one expectation: arrive with respect, and understand what you are witnessing.
