iFani is known for blending catchy, accessible beats with socially aware lyrics and a strong sense of cultural identity. Musically, iFani balances fun, radio-friendly tracks with deeper, message-driven content. Songs like “Milli” and “Ewe” showcased his ability to create hits, while also reflecting everyday experiences and township life in a relatable way. His delivery is often energetic and conversational, making his music feel both personal and widely accessible.
“My sound has always been rooted in who I am – the language I speak, the stories I’ve lived, and the people I represent. Even as I step into a new chapter, that doesn’t change. I’m still committed to making music that’s honest, that balances joy with meaning, and that speaks to everyday life in a real way. Growth for me isn’t about losing my identity, it’s about refining it and sharing it with even more people.”
Beyond music, iFani has been recognized for his intellect and discipline—he holds a civil engineering degree, which adds another layer to his public persona. Fans often see him as more than just a rapper: he represents ambition, education, and staying grounded in one’s roots.
After stepping back from the spotlight for a period, his recent return -along with renewed attention on tracks like “Shake”has reminded audiences of his lasting influence. QUESTION AND ANSWERS
You’ve made a long-awaited return to the music scene — what emotions have defined this comeback for you personally and professionally?
Excitement and relief. I’ve been working my way back into the industry since 2023. It’s been ups and downs but luckily for me, I had learned patience and resilience in the long time I spent at home.
Looking back, what were the main reasons that led you to step away from music at the time?
In 2015 there was the beef with the late AKA coupled with my exhaustion mentally and physically. All that added to me wanting to take a break & re-assess myself.
Before you left the industry, what challenges were you facing that fans may not have been aware of?
Problem only started when Sony forced me to do my second album amd after it’s release the beef started.
During your time away, how did your perspective on music, fame, and purpose evolve?
During my time away all my views and beliefs changed. I found value in people and in little things that bring happiness like raising kids, taking long walks, going to the beach, cultural things etc. I didn’t follow music at the time, I was happy with family amd understanding my place/purpose in the life.
Your song “Shake” is currently trending again, how does it feel to see your older work resonate with a whole new generation?
It’s exciting and heartwarming. I performed a lot for kids shows back in the days, more than any other artist. Now those kids have grown and it warms my heart to see that they remember. I’m really touched and thankful.
Do you think the resurgence of your music speaks to its timelessness, and if so, what do you believe makes your sound endure?
My sound has always been unique, hence the name: iFani – ayifani, it’s not the same. I never followed trends, I made songs for grandma’s, I performed for kids, I did TV shows showcasing Amapantsula as a Rapper. I’ve always been a thinker outside the box. And now, many years later, that originality still shines.
Why did you decide to do a remix of Shakeand How did you select the people to be on such a timeless song, that even today is still relevant even on Tik-Tok?
Shake started trending on Tik-Tok this year, 13 years after its original release. That prompted the idea to do a remix with fresh new talent. I selected people from home, you know ‘charity begins at home.’ We are all under Asanda Empires.
You’ve always been known for staying true to your identity and incorporating isiXhosa into your music — how important is that authenticity in this new phase of your career?
We were taught at UCT that as engineers we should create for others. I saw Xhosa as a “dying” language in future because with every generation more Xhosa kids were switching to English. So I decided to engineer it back into the system thru music & entertainment. I did my best but I failed here & there. I’ve learnt from my failures & im back to continue my journey to make isiXhosa fun & preserve it for generations.
You’ve now signed with Asanda Empires, what does this partnership represent for you, and how will it shape your next moves?
It’s the best thing to have happened to me at this time when the industry has shut its doors to me. I feel like I belong somewhere now & my purpose has fertile soil from which to grow. Now I’m more confident than ever that my upcoming album; 3rd Quadrant will do very well.
As you step back into the spotlight, which artists or producers would you most like to collaborate with, both locally and internationally?
Scotts Maphuma, Nasty C, Kabza De Small, A-Reece & Zee Nxumalo, that’s my top 5.
What can fans expect from you going forward in terms of sound, storytelling, and the kind of impact you want your music to have?
The new sound has grown because I have grown as a person & as an artist. Fans should expect to laugh and to cry. As always it’s only truth & honesty in my music.
