Virgin Atlantic adds more flights to South Africa due to increased demand for travel
- Virgin Atlantic will increase capacity to South Africa operating 10 weekly flights to Johannesburg and 11 to Cape Town.
- Increased capacity responds to growing travel demand between South Africa and the UK.
- Enhanced onboard experience and seamless global connections via London Heathrow.
Virgin Atlantic has announced a significant increase in capacity to South Africa for the upcoming winter 2026/27 season, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to the market and meeting growing demand for both leisure and business travel.
From October 2026 through April 2027, the airline will operate up to 10 flights per week between London Heathrow and Johannesburg OR Tambo, alongside 11 weekly services into Cape Town. The expanded schedule provides travellers from South Africa with greater flexibility, improved connectivity and more opportunities to experience Virgin Atlantic’s award-winning service.
The increase in frequency comes as international travel demand continues to climb, with South Africans showing a growing appetite for premium, experience-led travel. By boosting capacity on both key routes, Virgin Atlantic aims to support tourism growth, facilitate trade and continue to strengthen ties between South Africa, the United Kingdom and onward global destinations.
The updated flight schedule also enhances convenience for travellers, with earlier morning arrivals into South Africa allowing passengers to maximise their time on the ground, and later evening departures from Johannesburg offering a more seamless overnight journey to London. Having served South Africa for nearly three decades, Virgin Atlantic continues to play a key role in connecting the region to global markets, with this latest capacity increase marking another milestone in supporting tourism growth, trade and cultural exchange.
Passengers travelling between South Africa and London Heathrow benefit from seamless onward connections to a wide network of destinations across Europe, North America and the Caribbean. As a member of the SkyTeam alliance and through its joint venture with various global airlines, Virgin Atlantic offers access to more than 200 destinations worldwide, making it an attractive option for both leisure and corporate travellers.
Marc Harding, Country Manager South Africa at Virgin Atlantic, commented: ““We’re seeing strong momentum out of South Africa, particularly among travellers who value quality, convenience and memorable experiences. This expansion is about meeting that demand with a product that stands apart, while continuing to invest in a market that plays an important role in our global network.”
